Finnish Scholarships to the Wilson Center can be applied for from 1st February until 9th March 2025

The scholarships are available for 6-month periods between 1st September 2025 and 31st December 2027. The application round results will be published in May 2025.

The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C., established by the U.S. Congress in 1968, is a nonpartisan research center, think tank and open forum for dialogue which provides scholars with a chance to deepen their knowledge and skills, exchange ideas and make valuable contacts.

The Finnish Scholarships are intended for people who hold influential positions in social and economic life or in the field of media in Finland, and for scholars with a doctoral degree in those fields. In particular, historians are encouraged to apply. The applicant’s project should relate to the Wilson Center’s Global Europe Program or History and Public Policy Program. University of Helsinki-Wilson Center Scholar Exchange Program – 2020-22 Scholarship Recipients

The University of Helsinki, a number of Finnish foundations, and the Wilson Center worked jointly to select a group of 4 highly qualified candidates out of 36 applications. The four scholarship recipients will be able to spend a 6-month research period during 2020-22 at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington D.C. The fellows will receive a stipend and travel funds directly from the Finnish foundations for a research period of 6 months in residence at the Wilson Center.

Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C., established by the U.S. Congress in 1968, is a nonpartisan, international research center, think tank and open policy forum, where influential thinkers and doers and researchers come together to develop independent research and actionable ideas. Networking and dialogue between politics, economics and different sectors of society are at the forefront of the wide range of activities at the Wilson Center – in addition to producing key research and hosting seminars around the globe, each year the Wilson Center welcomes approximately 150 global scholars for in-house residency programs in Washington, D.C..

To extend the cooperation and promote Finnish-American dialogue, a special scholarship program for Finnish professionals was launched in 2013 as part of the Wilson Center’s Global Europe Program. Selected competitively from the academia, media, business and public policy communities, these fellows will work on proposed projects and contribute to the research and dialogue facilitated by the Wilson Center.

The University of Helsinki, a number of Finnish foundations, and the Wilson Center worked jointly to select a group of 8 highly qualified candidates out of 45 applications. The eight scholarship recipients will be able to spend a 3-month research period during 2017-19 at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington D.C. The fellows will receive a stipend and travel funds directly from the Finnish foundations for a research period of 3 months in residence at the Wilson Center.

In cooperation with the University of Helsinki, and with the generous support of a number of prestigious Finnish foundations, the Wilson Center has inaugurated a new scholarship program for Finnish professionals. Selected competitively from the scholarly, media, business and public policy communities, these fellows will work on proposed projects and contribute to the research and dialogue facilitated by the Wilson Center.

The fellows will receive a stipend and travel funds directly from the Finnish foundations for a research period of 6 months in residence at the Wilson Center.

Finnish Scholarships to the Wilson Center can be applied for from 1st January until 31st January 2013. The scholarships are available for 2–6-month periods between 1st September 2013 and 31st December 2015. The application round results will be published in early March 2013.

The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C., established by the U.S. Congress in 1968, is a nonpartisan research center, think tank and open forum for dialogue which will now become available also for Finnish scholars thus providing them with a chance to deepen their knowledge and skills, exchange ideas and make valuable contacts.

The Finnish Scholarships are intended for people who hold influential positions in social, economic and cultural life and media in Finland and scholars in those fields. To apply for a grant, please fill in and send an application form.

The Wilson Center has cooperated with, for instance, the Finnish Foreign Ministry since the late 1990s by organising seminars and conferences on current bilateral and global questions. To extend the cooperation, a special Finnish Center for U.S.-European Programming will be launched in 2013 as part of the Wilson Center’s European Studies Program to promote Finnish-American dialogue on the state level as well as in the areas of economics, society, sciences, culture and media. WWIC’s Finnish Center organises, for instance, the annual Martti Ahtisaari Symposium on diplomacy and global challenges.

The residential and specifically tailored scholarships for Finnish influencers and experts are a key part of the Wilson Center’s Finnish Program. Professor Henrik Meinander from the University of Helsinki coordinates the program on the Finnish side and it is funded by the Helsingin Sanomat Foundation, Alfred Kordelin Foundation, Svenska Kulturfonden and Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation, which have their representatives on the program’s board.
